Celiac Ganglion

Celiac ganglion refers to any of the two sympathetic ganglia that form part of the autonomic nervous system.   Each of them lies on each side of the celiac artery.   The two ganglia are usually very big and also have irregular shapes.  They form masses of the nerve tissue located in the upper region of the abdomen.  Both of them are the largest ganglia in the autonomic nervous system.

Each celiac ganglion appears like a lymph gland that is placed on either side of the midline right in front of the   diaphragm’s crura. They are also close to the adrenal glands. On the right hand side, one ganglion is also placed behind the inferior vena cava.   In some cases, the two ganglia are also known as solar ganglia or semilunar ganglia.

A typical celiac ganglion forms part of the sympathetic pre-vertebral chain. This usually has a variety of   neurotransmitters and receptors. It also has nitric oxide any may also constitute a modulation point in the line of the efferent and afferent fibers located between the ovary and the central nervous system.

When considering the path, the celiac ganglion has its upper part joined by the greater splanchnic nerve.  The other lower part is usually segmented off and also referred to as “aorticorenal ganglion”. It usually receives the lesser splanchnic nerve while it gives off the greater part of the renal plexus.

Both celiac ganglia are known for containing neurons which may innervate with the liver, spleen, gallbladder, small intestine, kidney and the colon.  Both of them also innervate the secondary interstitial cells and the ovarian theca.

When the adrenergic activity of the celiac ganglion is modified, it can result in a changed capacity of the ovary to produce progesterone.  This can lead to several complications in the life of a pregnant woman.
